I really appreciate what you say here. However, I'm inclined to think that the critique of gerontocracy is on firmer ground when that charge is directed at specific institutional sectors--e.g., Congress and the university.

Absolutely. If only the argument were being made with that nuance! Instead it's Youngers vs Boomers which - I fear - is a really dangerous argument.
